Safe Speeds for Latin America and the Caribbean (part 1): Why Safe Speeds are Needed

This webinar is part of the “Webinar Series: Safe Speeds for Latin America and the Caribbean”, organized and hosted by the World Bank’s Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), under the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS). The goal of the series was to disseminate the "Guide for Safe Speeds: Managing Traffic Speeds to Save Lives and Improve Livability", and other complimentary resources, and introduce the Roads for Live (R4L) Framework for selecting and implementing safe speeds and how to identify effective solutions to support them.   

The first part of the series, “Why Safe Speeds are Needed”, focused on explaining the importance of speed management and myth-busting common speed management myths.

Why Speed Management Matters

Presented by Eva M. Eichinger-Vill at the World Bank, the first session explained why speeds management matters; the role of speed in the Safe System approach and survivable speeds, road safety benefits and co-benefits of achieving safe speeds; and what speed management tools and resources are available.

 

Speed Myth Busting

Siba El-Samra, Urban Mobility Manager at WRI, shared and debunked some common myths and misconceptions about safe speeds.

 

Speed Management Strategy and Action Plans

Alejandro Schwedhelm, Urban Mobility Manager at WRI, discussed what a speed management strategy is, and explained, step by step, the process to design and implement one, based on the R4L Framework. He also explained how action plans contribute to the success of strategy implementation. Finally, Alejandro presented case studies from Mexico and Spain.
